There are great savings when you invest in a good stock powder like Vegeta. The cheapest ready-made stock in a box costs $2.89 for a litre (that's 4 cups). The equivalent for stock cubes is 47 cents per litre (4 cups) and for stock powder is 22 cents per litre (4 cups). We use Vegeta stock powder - it gives a good flavour and we can adjust the amounts. Other pluses are that it's gluten free and you can buy reduced salt versions.
Yes, we know making your own stock is best for flavour and is likely to be the best value too, but we don't have the time and most people told us that they wouldn't bother.
